The next Rands-in-Raffle and Members Attendance Club Draw will be on Friday, 02 June 2023. Club Pool A is standing at R5000.00 with Club Pool B at R5000.00 AND Club Pool C R2600.00.

The past week’s PGA Championships will be remembered for more than the tense last-day action. Man of the week was undoubtedly Michael Block, a PGA professional from California.

One Sunday evening we received the sad news that Derek Botes had passed away. Derek was certainly a colourful character in our Club and will be missed. Knowing him, we should not be sad but rather celebrate a life lived fully, and definitely to his own tune. In golfing terms Derek went out on a high, having just won the Jock of the Bushveld in Mbombela on Saturday, on the back of gold and silver medals at the World Transplant Games in Australia. Arrangements for a memorial get-together will be communicated by the Club in due course.

First up, congratulations to our Men’s Handicap League teams for their solid wins in the weekend’s matches. They are well placed to compete at the business end this year, and we wish them continued success.

I was at the Club on Monday, and it looked like a desert sandstorm hit the course! For those who haven’t been around, it’s hollow-tining time and the team has been hard at work to treat the greens, tee boxes and fairways for the upcoming winter season.

2023 Autumn Hollow-tining will take place from Sunday afternoon 30 April to Wednesday 03 May, with the course opening on Thursday 04 May 2023

 

I am writing this week’s insert from Utrecht, and no it’s not the Utrecht in Netherlands, but the one in the middle of no-where somewhere between Newcastle and Vryheid in Kwa-Zulu Natal where I am visiting family. As usual, I have popped into some of these little town golf courses on route and whilst some are a bit run down and battling, others are the main gathering point for the local community where friends and family get together for a round of golf and a social “kuier”.
