The weather continues to play havoc on our winter golf plans, and the various leagues have not been spared. The Southern Cape Golf Union has had a busy season as decisions have had to be made almost at every event.

Well, sitting last weekend watching the Open Championship, I thought for a moment they had moved it to the Southern Cape as the weather in Liverpool on Sunday resembled what we have had for the last two months. A big congratulations must go to Christo Lamprecht for winning the Silver medal as the leading amateur. A little research indicates that Christo was a member of George Golf Club from 2007 until 2013, which must indicate that he learned his golf at the same course we all love playing every week.

This week attention moves to Royal Liverpool, and it is not for a Beatles reunion. The 151st Open Championships returns to England, to the sight of Rory’s 2014 victory. And he is coming off a win in Scotland last week. Maybe the week to break a major drought? Let’s see.

It is hard to write a weekly golf column when you have not been playing. But as I am enjoying my winter golf sabbatical, I have had time to read a bit and fine tune my set of clubs. One positive is that this year, my time off is not the result of disgustingly shocking golf that have me contemplating quitting all together and becoming George Golf Club’s first non-playing captain.

This past weekend saw some league action once again, when our Men’s Handicap teams played matches at Kingswood and Oubaai. The Seniors’ games were postponed due to the wet conditions, while the Handicap matches were kept to singles matches only.
